In most cases, the inflammation of the vagina and vulva are caused by an overgrowth of microorganisms. About 75% of women are reported to have suffered from the condition at least once in a lifetime. It should be noted that girls before puberty and women having no sexual contacts with men rarely suffer from the condition. Since these microorganisms are normally found in the healthy vagina, the condition is not considered sexually transmitted.
